Annabel Abbs’ celebrated debut is The Joyce Girl. To write her fictionalised account of this true story, Annabel immersed herself in the thrilling world of Lucia Joyce, daughter of Irish author James Joyce. Lucia was a modern dancer who had affairs with Samuel Beckett and Alexander Calder, and was treated by pioneering psychoanalyst Dr Carl Jung. Now, Annabel asks: ‘Why did art, literature, music and dance flourish in 1920s Paris? What was the magic formula? And can we replicate it today?’
Supported by the University of Sydney.
