Popular ideas of Central Australia are dominated by mythology and masculinity. Writer and artist Kim Mahood grew up in the country’s dusty interior and frequently returns to work with the Aboriginal people of the region. Here, she shares her collaboration with the late artist Pamela Lofts, which led to the creation of Violet Sunset, her desert alter ego. Violet is an adventurer in search of meaning among the ephemeral lakes of the interior and challenges popular conceptions of Central Australia.
