Rocket Readings is a lively annual poetry event that has become iconic in Wollongong. Presented by MC Linda Godfrey, this year features local poet Jack Oats, and national poet, Todd Turner. The performance will be followed by an open mic and time to mingle with the poets over tea and coffee afterwards. Presented by the South Coast Writers Centre in collaboration with Wollongong Art Gallery and the support of Create NSW.
Jack Oats (Australian)
Jack Oats (aka Baker) is a man of all trades. Under various pseudonyms, he’s been a teacher, ornithologist, conservation biologist, bureaucrat, grandfather, husband. He has published lots of science; years ago, he managed Biodiversity Conservation Science for the NSW Government. Nowadays, Jack Oats makes short fictional and factual word creations as part of the Recovery Plan for the Semi-colon. His first published collection of poetry, Soaring, pokes fun, casts doubts, celebrates Australia’s natural heritage, shares hope, gives love.
Todd Turner (Australian)
Todd Turner is an Australian poet who lives and works in Sydney. His debut collection of poetry Woodsmoke was published by Black Pepper Publishing in 2014. The book was shortlisted for the Dame Mary Gilmore Award and the Anne Elder Award. Turner's poems have been widely published in literary journals and newspapers such as Meanjin, Southerly, Overland and The Australian. His work features in anthologies such as The Best Australian Poems and Contemporary Australian Poetry.
Linda Godfrey (Australian)
Linda Godfrey is the program manager of the Wollongong Writers Festival and the curator of Rocket Readings. She is a poet, writer and editor.
